Celebrity chef to open Latin, Indian-inspired Trenza in West Ave

By Josh Mitelman

Celebrity chef Susie Jimenez — a runner-up on The Food Network’s “Food Network Star” and co-host of “Sabores de Familia” on Fox International Channels’ Utilisima — is putting her manifold talents on display with a new restaurant in West Ave.

Trenza, which opens to the public Nov. 7 at 2800 Kirby Drive, offered a sneak peek over the weekend.

A fusion of many of the the many foods and flavors by which Jimenez, 34, has been inspired — from her time growing up in California learning to cook classic Mexican dishes alongside her mother and grandmother, through culinary school in San Francisco and beyond — Trenza will offer a Latin menu with an Indian influence and other nationalities mixed in.

“It’s very natural to me to make things taste great,” Jimenez said at Trenza’s grand opening event.

In describing how she comes up with dishes that juxtapose multiple influences — such as French, Italian, Mexican and Indian — Jimenez said, “I’m like, ‘I don’t know what just happened to my brain (in creating a certain dish), but somehow I have a natural touch, and I love it.’”

The menu consists of small dishes — not to be confused with tapas, noted general manager Marcela Perez — made in an open kitchen.

Jimenez, who also owns a catering company called Spice it Up in Aspen, Colo., has her creative influence all over the restaurant. In addition to creating the food, bar and wine menus, she also designed the 4,700-square-foot space, which has multiple dining spaces to create a “dynamic food experience.” Houston-based Texana Builders built the space.

Partnering with Jimenez on Trenza — which is in the former home of Schiller Del Grande Restaurant Group’s Alto Pizzeria — is Sonny Sachdeva, managing partner of Roaring Fork Advisors LP in Aspen.

Trenza will be open for dinner seven days a week and will offer brunch Saturday and Sunday.
